Calypso is an album by Harry Belafonte, released by RCA Victor in 1956. The CD was released on April 28, 1992 . It is the first full-length gramophone LP to sell over one million copies (Bing Crosby's "White Christmas (song)" and Tennessee Ernie Ford's "Sixteen Tons" had surpassed 1 million copies before 1956). The album is number four on Billboard's "Top 100 Album" list for having spent 31 weeks at number 1, 58 weeks in the top ten, and 99 weeks on the U.S. charts. In this amusing 1934 calypso, Roaring Lion explains to the world at large that,"If you want to be happy living a king 's life// never make a pretty woman hour wife/all you got to do is just as I say.../(......)Always marry a woman uglier than you".
This is one of the calypsos best known to rhe general public, thank to the versions recorded in the 1950s by Harry Belafonte and Robert Mitchum.
This calypso, sung for the first time by Lord Kitchener in 1963, is a perfect example of what Trinidadians mean by "double entente":lyrics full of bawdy allusions that require reading between the lines.
