Cambridge is a town located in Lamoille County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,186.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 164.9 km˛ (63.7 mi˛). 164.9 km˛ (63.7 mi˛) of it is land and 0.02% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,186 people, 1,266 households, and 886 families residing in the town. The population density is 19.3/km˛ (50.0/mi˛). There are 1,363 housing units at an average density of 8.3/km˛ (21.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 96.52% White, 0.25% Black or African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 2.48% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,266 households out of which 32.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.3% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% are non-families. 20.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.91.


In the town the population is spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 35.9% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 8.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 101.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.3 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $44,950, and the median income for a family is $49,274. Males have a median income of $35,264 versus $23,199 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,527. 5.2% of the population and 2.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.3% of those under the age of 18 and 5.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

In 1791, the town was set to Chittenden county, and in 1796, to Franklin county, and finally, in December, 1836, is the date of the first deed on record in the town since it was a part of Lamoille county.
During the war of 1812, Cambridge did her full share in furnishing soldiers to defend our country, and were it available to us, we should like to print, a full list of those who served in the war.
The Congregational Church, located at Cambridge, was organized by Rev. Ithimar Hibbard, of Bennington, February 18, 1792, with twelve members The church building is a wood structure, built in 1805, being now the oldest church in Northern Vermont, and capable of seating about 300 persons.

The event was held at the Cambridge Junction Bridge in response to a request by the Vermont Covered Bridge Society for an opportunity to honor the Senator for his efforts to preserve the countries historic covered bridges.
William McKone, Cambridge resident and VCBS Secretary, spoke of the bridge's importance to the people and township of Cambridge.
Even in Vermont, whose residents have made a mission of preserving their historic covered bridges, less than 100 remain from what was over 500 only a century ago.
