Cambridge Scholars Publishing was founded in 2001 by a group of young scholars (PhD students and research fellows) at Cambridge University. The press has grown rapidly since, publishing around 150 academic titles in 2006, with plans for 250 in 2007. The nature of its titles are geared towards an academic library market and are therefore highly specialised. Around 90% of its authors are holders of doctorate degrees. Its academic orientation is also visible in some of its more attractive features – such as its policy not to charge for permissions, to accept manuscripts which are not necessarily attractive as 'sellable' books, and to avoid more mainstream books, even where these appear to have a wider market.
