Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,027 km² (783 mi²). 1,631 km² (630 mi²) of it is land and 395 km² (153 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 19.50% water.
Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 43,664 people, 14,705 households, and 11,381 families residing in the county. The population density is 27/km² (69/mi²). There are 16,958 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (27/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 75.04% White, 20.11% Black or African American, 0.49% Native American, 1.01% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 1.37% from other races, and 1.88% from two or more races. 3.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 14,705 households out of which 46.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.20% are married couples living together, 11.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.60% are non-families. 17.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.22.
