Cameron is a city located in Clinton and DeKalb County, Missouri. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,312.


Geography

Cameron is located at 39°44'35" North, 94°14'26" West (39.742998, _94.240418)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.9 km˛ (5.3 mi˛). 13.8 km˛ (5.3 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.56% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,312 people, 2,263 households, and 1,434 families residing in the city. The population density is 602.1/km˛ (1,560.6/mi˛). There are 2,540 housing units at an average density of 184.0/km˛ (476.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 84.90% White, 12.64% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races. 1.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,263 households out of which 33.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% are married couples living together, 11.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.6% are non-families. 32.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 3.03.


In the city the population is spread out with 18.5% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 40.2% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 171.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 189.0 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $32,136, and the median income for a family is $40,540. Males have a median income of $29,529 versus $19,777 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,375. 12.0% of the population and 9.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.9% of those under the age of 18 and 19.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
