Cameron is a city located in Marshall County, West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,212.


Geography

Cameron is located at 39°49'36" North, 80°33'58" West (39.826579, _80.566107)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.3 km˛ (0.9 mi˛). 2.3 km˛ (0.9 mi˛) of it is land and 1.11% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,212 people, 478 households, and 305 families residing in the city. The population density is 525.8/km˛ (1,357.9/mi˛). There are 533 housing units at an average density of 231.2/km˛ (597.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 98.93% White, 0.17% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 0.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 478 households out of which 27.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.6% are married couples living together, 13.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.0% are non-families. 31.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.99.


In the city the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 23.4% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 22.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 85.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.1 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $25,119, and the median income for a family is $26,958. Males have a median income of $31,875 versus $14,438 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,447. 30.6% of the population and 26.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 44.4% of those under the age of 18 and 14.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

At a meeting of the citizens at Cameron District on August 11, 1866, with W. McDonald, Clerk, and J. Lydick, Supervisor, a tax of five mills was levied on all taxable property for the purpose of carrying on of free schools; and a tax of ten cents on the hundred dollars as a contingent fund.
Cameron accepted the quota suggested by the State Mission Board, and has each year since the expiration of the five-year period paid equally as much toward all the various missionary endeavors of the denomination.
