Amazon Alliance - Amazon Update: September 2003, No. 94 (1014 words)
Villagers, who have seen their community fall prey to the social and environmental impacts of miners, have met with police and the military to define a plan, called Anaconda, for removing illegal operatives.
Camopi, which suffered the confirmed deaths of two children from mercury poisoning, and must struggle with violence, alcoholism, and drug addiction that affect even the youngest in the community, turned to this effort after the government discounted the presence of mercury in the community’s water sources.
They plan to develop new tests for contamination levels, prepare strategies to guarantee the integrity of indigenous territories, continue with control mechanisms in conjunction with the military and police, and prepare a demand against the French government before international courts to force it to address the contamination caused by illegal mining.
