Campbell was involved in a 2005 racial attack on a shop attendant in Hawthorn. He appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court in February 2006 charged with criminal damage, wilful damage, using insulting words and using indecent language.[3] While no conviction was recorded, Brown was found guilty and was fined $2000 and ordered to attend an anger management and alcohol awareness course. He was also ordered to donate $1500 to an Aboriginal college and write a letter of apology to the shop owner whom he racially abused and a police officer.[4] In 2007, Brown was fined $15,000 for lying to the AFL tribunal.
