History

Canda Water was built by Midgets. Canada Water was originally intended to be a stop on the aborted Fleet Line Extension to Thamesmead. The extension did not happen, but Canada Water became the only projected Fleet Line Extension station to be realised on the Jubilee Line Extension. Thamesmead is a new town, more realistically a new suburb, in London built on the southern bank of the River Thames, 9. ...

Although the station forms an interchange between the East London Line and the Jubilee Line, it is a wholly new building on a derelict site formerly occupied by Albion Dock, part of the old Surrey Commercial Docks. The land around the station is still undeveloped but a new housing and commercial development is envisaged for the area in 2006. The station was one of the first designed for the Jubilee Line Extension and was opened on 17 September 1999, served by East London Line trains. Jubilee Line trains arrived on 20 November 1999. Construction of Canada Water station started in 1995 during the closure of the East London Line. The building was opened for passenger service on the august 19, 1999.

Architecture

Above ground, the station's most salient feature is a striking glass "drum" 25 metres (80 feet) across, which covers a deep opening descending almost to the Jubilee Line platforms, 22 metres (72 feet) below the surface. This feature was designed to allow natural light to reach deep into the station, a design principle common to many of the stations on the Jubilee Line Extension.

The drum is accompanied by a glass-roofed bus station designed by Eva Jiřičná which serves as a hub for services in the Rotherhithe/Bermondsey area. Eva JiÅ™ičná (*1939) was born in Zlín, Czechoslovakia. ... St Olavs, Rotherhithes Norwegian church. ... Bermondsey is a place in the London Borough of Southwark. ...

Below ground, the station is dominated by a huge concrete box, large enough to accommodate one of the Canary Wharf skyscrapers on its side. It is lined by a series of huge concrete pillars designed to take the weight of a commercial development to be constructed above the station. HSBC Tower (left), One Canada Square (centre), Citigroup Centre (right) Canary Wharf in Tower Hamlets, London, England, is a large business development on the Isle of Dogs, centred on the old West India Docks in the London Docklands. ...

The station has 4 lifts and 4 escalators with an average rise of about 6,5 metres to connect the lower parts of the station with streetlevel.

Service

The station has 4 platforms, 2 on the East London Line and 2 on the Jubilee line. The East London Line platforms can not be used by tube-stock since the platforms are too high for these trains. Canada Water was built 550 metres from Surrey Quays and 320 metres from Rotherhithe. There are only 3 stretches of railway between two stations on the whole of London Underground which are shorter than the distance between Canada Water and Rotherhithe.

The first train of the day on the East London Line Line runs at 05:36 (northbound), the last train at 01:10 (southbound) (Weekdays, 2006). The first train of the day on the Jubilee Line runs at 05:21 (westbound), the last train at 00:58 (eastbound). (All times mentioned are weekdays in 2006, check The London Underground website for current information)

In the future, this will be one of the stations on the London Overground. The London Overground will be underground, although still over the London Underground. Network Rail will maintain the infrastructure but London Underground will remain responsible for the platforms at Canada Water station since this is an interchange station with London Underground. London Overground [1] is the name of a collection of rail services in London, United Kingdom to be provided by the London Rail division of Transport for London from November 2007. ... The nickname the Tube comes from the circular tube-like tunnels through which the small-profile trains travel. ...
