But it is not the first film he has directed; back in 1992 he wrote and directed a short film for the Canadian Film Centre called Blue.
Her early short film, Dead Meat, tells the story of a junkie who gets in trouble with a local heavy, and though some of the scenes have an absurdist edge, the film in general seems like an earnest attempt to capture the minimalist style and menacing tone of a Hemingway short story like The Killers.
Looking at the two films in succession, it might seem painfully obvious that Dale was right to move closer to the Jarmusch/Coens/Lynch school of absurdity, and indeed belonged there all along.
