Encyclopedia > Canadian International Development Agency

Formed in 1968 by the Canadian government to appease general feelings of distrust and disillusion surrounding foreign aid programs, The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) was formed.[1][2] CIDA administers foreign aid programs in developing countries, and operates in partnership with other Canadian organizations in the public and private sectors as well as other international organizations. It reports to the Parliament of Canada through the minister for International Cooperation. Its mandate is to "support sustainable development in developing countries in order to reduce poverty and contribute to a more secure, equitable, and prosperous world". CIDA is managed by the federal Minister of International Cooperation, who at the time is the Honourable Beverly J. Oda.[3].
