Their duties are to protect rail commerce and the rail infrastructure. Three main focused areas of interest are: - Traffic Enforcement and Collision investigation to reduce deaths and injuries along the rail lines and on rail properties
- Criminal Investigation and Crime Prevention Related Intiatives
- Public Safety and Awareness Education
Their numbers were greatly reduced during privatization of the CNR in the mid-nineties when the CNR transitioned from a Crown Corporation to Private Industry and became a tax paying corporation thereby entitling CN to the provincial and municipal policing efforts already in place across the nation. This allowed for the reduction of the federal railway police service. The CN Police Service has a proud and long standing history in the building of Canada and have had a presence in many of the communities across the nation. The Service continues to be a vital role in protecting the nations commerce and rail infrastructure to this day. The CN Police Service today is an amalgamation of two Canadian railway police services, the CN Police and in 2005 the BC Rail Police. In the US it is an amalgamation of CN Police and three US railway police services, Illinois Central Railroad Police, Grand Trunk Railway Police and Wisconsin Central Railway Police.
