Coin collecting is to be distinguished from numismatics, the scientific study of money and its history in all its varied forms.
Numismatics includes the study of coins, banknotes, stock certificates, medals, medallions, and token coins.
The first international convention for coin collectors was held in August 15–18, 1962, in Detroit, Michigan, sponsored by the American NumismaticAssociation and the CanadianNumismaticAssociation.
The mission of the American NumismaticAssociation, a nonprofit, educational organization chartered by the United States Congress, is to promote the study and collection of money, including coins, tokens, medals and paper currency, for research, interpretation and preservation of history and culture from ancient times to the present.
The objects and purposes of the PNNA are to promote, extend, and protect the interests of numismatists and numismatic activities throughout the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories, and Alaska) and to foster and encourage the study of numismatics in all its forms.
As the national numismatic organization of Canada, the CNA is a non-profit educational organization formed in 1950 and incorporated by Canada Charter in 1963.
