Encyclopedia > Canadian Stage

The Canadian Stage Company is the largest contemporary theatre company in Canada. It was founded in 1987 from the merger of the Toronto Free Theatre and Centre Stage, but dates back some 50 years. The production involve both local talent, but also internation contribution. The Company changed its name to CanStage in 2000.

The third largest theatre company in Canada (after the STRATFORD FESTIVAL and the SHAW FESTIVAL), the Canadian Stage Company was launched in 1988 with the merger of Bill Glassco's CentreStage and Guy Sprung's Toronto Free Theatre.
Based in Toronto, it has 4 stages: the 875-seat Bluma Appel Theatre at the St Lawrence Centre, the 240-seat Theatre Downstairs and the 150-seat Theatre Upstairs at 26 Berkeley St (former home of Toronto Free Theatre), and the open-air High Park site where free plays are staged each summer.
Canadian Stage has rebuilt by focusing on commercially successful plays, mainly from the international repertoire; it has reported a surplus every season since 1991 and has a healthy subscriber base of 20 000.
