Encyclopedia > Canadian Unity Council

The Canadian Unity Council is a non-profit organization whose mission is the promotion of Canadian Unity and the current federal institutions.

The CUC started as the "Canada Committee" in 1964, in the middle of Quebec's Quiet Revolution. The period corresponds to the rise of both the Quebec independence movement and the demands for reform by Quebec federalists. Jean Lesage, Daniel Johnson Sr. ...

The election of the Parti Québécois in 1976 gave the impulse for a coalition strategy, which included all federalist parties. Funded by the Government of Canada, the CUC published numerous pro-Canada studies advertizing the merits of Canadian federalism.

In 1996, the Centre for Research and Information on Canada (CRIC) was created to assist in the CUC's mission to promote the federal government's view of what federal Canada is.

Management Response - Council for Canadian Unity - Encounters with Canada (861 words)
Canadian Heritage would establish the maximum amount of funding for a given year based on available budgets and any additional travel costs incurred by the CCU were paid by CCU.
While CCU had ticket information in their database, they were not receiving invoices from K and N Travel Agency nor were they keeping copies of tickets and therefore it was difficult to track when expenditures had been incurred or have back up documentation should another system failure occur.
Furthermore, because of the vast experience that the Council for Canadian Unity has with travel arrangements, they are able to assess the reasonableness of the amounts being claimed and will continue to require personal declarations where claims are not supported by a receipt.
