Montecastelli™ Selections - Boutique Italian wines with a focus on indigenous varietals (10707 words)
Canaiolo, also known as Canaiolo Nero to distinguish it from the white-berried version ("Drupeggio") widely used alongside Trebbiano, Malvasia, and Grechetto in many central Italian white blends, is one of the historic red grapes of Tuscany.
Canaiolo was successively cited by Soderini in the 17th century and by Villifranchi in the 18th century, by then with the spelling which corresponds to the modern form: Canaiolo.
Canaiolo has also had notable difficulties in adapting to many of the American rootstocks onto which European grape varieties are grafted in order to protect them from attacks from the root-eating phylloxera vine louse.
Canaiolo (374 words)
The beautifully restored stone farmhouse is now composed of four characteristic apartments, one in which the owner lives, the others which she rents including Canaiolo described here and No. 19 Malvasia.
The grounds around the farmhouse abound with flowering plants and are immaculately maintained, and there is an oval swimming pool (9m x 5m), which is furnished with sun recliners and enjoys a beautiful view across the farm's vineyard.
Canaiolo, which takes its name from a type of grape, is on the first floor of the farmhouse and has its entrance by outside staircase leading up from the garden.
