Canajoharie is a town located in Montgomery County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,797.

The Town of Canajoharie is located south of the Mohawk River. There is a village called Canajoharie in the town.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 111.6 km² (43.1 mi²). 111.1 km² (42.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.46% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 3,797 people, 1,492 households, and 1,026 families residing in the town. The population density is 34.2/km² (88.5/mi²). There are 1,637 housing units at an average density of 14.7/km² (38.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.02% White, 0.63% Black or African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. 1.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,492 households out of which 33.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.0% are married couples living together, 11.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% are non-families. 26.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.00.
