Before urban development the area was the estuary of a river named Wong Nai Chung, which was looked like the neck of a goose. The bridge across the river was known as Ngo Keng Bridge (literally goose neck bridge). The river was later covered and turned into subterranean. Canal Road Flyover on top of Canal Road East and Canal Road West was also popularly known as Ngo Keng Bridge.
