The Canary Current branches south from the North Atlantic Current and flows toward the South West about as far as Senegal where it turns West. The cool temperature is caused by the upwelling nutrient-rich water drawn in from below the surface by the current.

The Canary Current flows along the African coast from north to south between 30°N and 10°N and offshore to 20°W (Fedoseev 1970).
The current passes through the Canary archipelago, the influence of the Equatorial Countercurrent is the same as in winter, and the strong cyclonic gyres form once again.
