The department was one of the nine original departments, created in 1830, and suffering little modifications in its extension over the years.


Economy

The main crops of the department are vines, maize, and assorted fruits and vegetables. Tourism, in the eastern coastal area, is one of the most important sources of income for the department, also enabling the development of important urban centres, such as Atlántida.
