Cańon City is a city located in Fremont County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 15,431.


Geography

Cańon City is located at 38°26'48" North, 105°13'42" West (38.446800, -105.228305)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 31.2 km² (12.0 mi²). 31.1 km² (12.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.08% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 15,431 people, 6,164 households, and 3,803 families residing in the city. The population density is 495.7/km² (1,284.1/mi²). There are 6,617 housing units at an average density of 212.5/km² (550.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.15% White, 1.59% African American, 1.04% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.61% from other races, and 2.01% from two or more races. 8.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 6,164 households out of which 28.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.0% are married couples living together, 10.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.3% are non-families. 33.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.90.


In the city the population is spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 100.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.3 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $31,736, and the median income for a family is $42,917. Males have a median income of $31,258 versus $21,849 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,970. 11.5% of the population and 7.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.9% of those under the age of 18 and 9.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

CaƱon City is the county seat of Fremont County in southern Colorado, with a population of approximately 16,000 people within the city limits, and another 5,000 to 7,000 people within the surrounding area in Fremont County.
The City is located in a mountain bowl along the Arkansas River valley as it flows east from the Rocky Mountains and the mouth of the Royal Gorge.
