Can vanas is a city in Puerto Rico, located in the north-east of the island. It is, along with San Juan, Bayam n, Guaynabo and Carolina, one of the cities that comprises the so called Metropolitan Area of Puerto Rico.
Large numbers of African slaves lived in the Can vanas area. Because of this, a considerable large number of Can vanas' population is Black.
Can vanas was also home of a large number of Ta no Indians. Because of this, Can vanas' professional sports teams have traditionally been nicknamed the Indios. In 1983, BSN's Indios won Puerto Rico's national basketball championship and they repeated in 1984, but they eventually disappeared during the 1990s. The Indias women's volleyball team has also won a number of championships. In Horse-racing, Can vanas is home to El Nuevo Comandante, Puerto Rico's most famous horse track, since 1972.
In 1983, an infamous criminal act occurred in Can vanas when police tried to intervene in a drug ridden barrio of the area, Villa sin Miedo. One policeman was shot on his lung and died shortly after, in a case that received wide media attention in Puerto Rico.
PuertoRico is a self-governing unincorporated organized territory of the United States, in the eastern Caribbean, consisting of the island of PuertoRico and some smaller islands.
PuertoRico is part of the Greater Antilles, located to the east of the Dominican Republic and to the west of the Lesser Antilles.
PuertoRico's current constitutional arrangements are the result of a treaty signed in 1952, so presumably it could become independent in the same way—a right not possessed by the states of the United States.
PuertoRico was invaded by the United States in the Spanish-American War on July 25, 1898 with a landing at Guánica Bay.
PuertoRico has an elected Resident Commissioner, who sits in Congress as a delegate of the people of PuertoRico; the delegate may speak in the House of Representatives and serve in committees but may not vote.
Spanish is the primary language on PuertoRico; estimates are that less than a quarter of the population is fully bilingual in English and Spanish.
