It seems that in its more remote origins Cantabria had one native mythology which with the passing of the years has connected with celtic mythology and Romans, becoming related partly with legends and traditions of the rest of Cantabrian Mountains. In most cases its deeper meaning, passed from parents to children through oral tradition, it has been diluted either because this meaning has been lost or because the classic writers trasmited it in a shorten way when they don´t gather all the popular wealth and mentality, paying attention only to cults and divinities that kept similarity with theirs. On the other hand the romanization at a first moment and the incursion of Christianism later have gone transforming the sense and representation of these pagans rites. Among the rest of myths that still persist as substrate in the Cantabrian tradition is the cult to great protective divinities like the adoration to Sun, as is testified in Cantabrian Steles, and in relation to the cult of the fire (bonfires of Saint John, coincident with solstice of summer, could be a reminiscence). Also it's idolized a supreme divinity-father (in Herrera de Camargo was discovered a beautiful bronze sculpture) wich in Roman time was associated with Jupiter and the cult to Sun and later with the Christian God.
