The Canter family originally opened up a delicatessen in Jersey City in 1919. They came west along with many Jews from the northeastern United States in the early 1940s, and opened a delicatessen in the Boyle Heights neighborhood, which at that time had a substantial Jewish population. After World War II, the Jewish population of Boyle Heights left en masse for the Fairfax District, West Hollywood, and other West Side neighborhoods (as well as the San Fernando Valley) and Canter's followed the influx of Jewish businesses west, converting a movie theater which had previously shown Yiddish-language films to a delicatessen much larger than its previous spaces. Canter Balance (4088 words)
Cantering on a circle has much the same effect on the horse than circling or bending the horse at the walk or trot.
In the canter leg-yield in a circle with the head to the outside and moving to the left, the horse would maintain the left lead and the rider uses the inside leg (right) to push the horse onto the outside rein and leg (the left rein and leg behind the girth forming a ‘wall’).
Once the counter canter is well established the rider can ride a serpentine at the canter in which the horse will be on the regular lead part of the time and on the counter canter the rest of the time (Figure 9-10).
THE HORSE MAGAZINE (1050 words)
The four beat canter mostly comes about from the horse not stepping through the rein and going forward, the activity is inadequate in the hindquarters.
Some horses are naturally more talented for canter and in exercises like flying changes, the quality of the flying change depends on the quality of the canter; if you have a good canter stride, you normally have a good flying change.
The canter for the horse is a natural movement, like walk, and you cannot restrict that movement or go against it.
