Canton, the county seat of Van Zandt County, is on State highways 19 and 64 on the Mill Creek tributary of the Sabine River, fourteen miles southeast of Wills Point in the central part of the county.
The first district courthouse at Canton opened in 1850, and a post office, the county's fourth, was established in that year.
Canton was incorporated in 1919 and elected a mayor and aldermen.
