Cao Bằng is a town in northern Vietnam. It is the capital and largest settlement of Cao Bằng province. It is located on the bank of the Bằng Giang river, and is around 30 km away from the border with China.
Cao Bằng Province is centered on the town of Cao Bằng itself.
Cao Bằng Province is divided into eleven districts: Hoa An, Quang Hoa, Tra Linh, Thach An, Nguyen Binh, Bao Lac, Bao Lam, Trung Khanh, Ha Lang, Thong Nong, and Ha Quang.
Cao Bằng's proximity to China has meant that it has had a somewhat turbulent history, having changed hands a number of times.
