Most of the residents were descended from European whalers who kidnapped Aboriginal women on the Tasmanian mainland and they settled on Cape Barren Island. During the Stolen Generation policy of the Australian Federal Government, children of the islanders were taken away from their parents in order that their 'blackness' be taught out of them.
On 10 May 2005, the Commonwealth lands on Cape Barren and Clarke Islands were handed over to be overseen by the local Aboriginal association. This marked the first official handover of government land back to the original inhabitants of the state of Tasmania.
The island can be reached by taking a flight from either Melbourne, Victoria or Launceston, Tasmania to Flinders Island. From whence, the island is but a short boat trip or plane trip away. Cape Breton's landscape is dominated by the Bras d'Or Lake system, which the island wraps around, the Strait of Canso, and the Cape Breton Highlands, which are considered a continuation of the Appalachian chain.
Cape Breton is now joined to the mainland by the Canso Causeway, completed in 1955, enabling direct road and rail traffic to and from the island, but constraining marine traffic to pass through the Canso Canal at the eastern end of the causeway.
