The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge is a steel bridge that lifts a horizontal span to allow passage of large ships. It crosses the Cape Fear River between Brunswick County, North Carolina and New Hanover County, North Carolina. It is used by U.S. Highway 17 Business, U.S. Highway 74, U.S. Highway 76, and U.S. Highway 421 for traffic coming from Brunswick County and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Constructed in 1969, it is the second bridge to cross the Cape Fear River in the Wilmington area and is currently the highest bridge in North Carolina. This bridge is of a type known as a "center span" drawbridge, and is one of the few left in the USA. The bridge opens by the entire center section being lifted vertically between the two towers.
