SableIsland is believed to have formed from large quantities of sand and gravel deposited on the continental shelf near the end of the last ice age.
A lighthouse was established on SableIsland by the British government in the 1790s and its life-saving crew became the first inhabitants of the island, a brief attempt at colonization at the end of the 16th century by France having failed.
