WIZARDS: Final Curtain Comes Down at Capital Centre (235 words)
The former home of the Washington Wizards, the Capital Centre, was imploded Sunday morning in front of several hundered people to make room for the new Boulevard at The Capital Centre, a 460,000 square foot retail and entertainment development scheduled to open in Fall 2003.
The Capital Centre opened its doors on December 2, 1973 to a sellout crowd of 17,500 when the Capital Bullets (now the Washington Wizards) downed the Seattle SuperSonics 98-96.
With the unprecedented success of live boxing matches at The Capital Centre, the arena was often referred to as the ‘Las Vegas of the East.
Washington Wizards (1963-Present) (4600 words)
The trade would work out for the Bullets as Howell proved to be a hustling, fundamentally sound player that helped the Bullets get into the playoffs for the first time in franchise history with a 37-43 record good enough for 3rd place.
However the Bullets would fall 3 games short of a return to the playoffs as they finished in 4th place with a 369-43 record, which was an impressive 18 game improvement over the previous season.
In the playoffs the Bullets would be overmatched by the Chicago Bulls who were well on the way to their 2nd straight NBA Championship losing 3 straight games.
