History

  • In 1937, A.J. Fletcher founded CBC when he created WRAL-AM 1240 (now WPJL).
  • In 1939 WRAL-AM first transmitted using a 250 watt transmitter, becoming Raleigh's second Radio Station (Second to WPTF-AM)
  • On September 6, 1946 CBC received a license for WCOY-FM (which was later changed to WRAL). This was a 250,000 watt transmitter.
  • December 15, 1956, CBC's flagship station WRAL-TV went on the air.
  • In 1979, WRAL-TV became the first TV station in North Carolina to have a dedicated helicopter.
  • In 1996, WRAL-TV was granted the first experimental high-definition television license in the United States by the Federal Communications Commission. In 2000, WRAL-HD aired the world's first all-HDTV newscast on October 13. In January 2001, WRAL converted all of its local news broadcasts to high-definition.
