Encyclopedia > Capoeira songs

In capoeira, music sets the rhythm, the style of play, and the energy of a game.

A roda will usually commence with a ladainha (litany), often sung by the most senior member present. These songs may be improvised on the spot, but are often famous songs written by an earlier mestre. After the ladainha has been sung, the same singer will usually sing the chulas, which are usually made up of any of the lines listed in the chulas section below but, again, may be improvised on the spot. The chorus repeats each line of the chula after it has been sung. Finally, corridos will be sung while the game is playing. In most rodas anyone can sing a corrido, though most often they will be sung by the members of the group playing instruments, the bateria.

The songs below are just some of the hundreds of songs that get sung at capoeira rodas around the world. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list.

Capoeira Music CDs - Capoeira gear - Association of Capoeira Engenho da Rainha, London UK (899 words)
The songs on this album are very catchy, basic, and the tempo spot on for a newcomer to capoeira.
These traditional songs are marked by the metallic twang of the berimbau (a one-string bow played with a stick), the repetitive beats of the atabaque (standing drum), and the sounds of the pandeiro (which is generally played by four beats and a shake).
Capoeira is a mix of solo pieces ("Juna," "Juna Verdadeira"), pieces accompanied by other instruments (drums on "Sao Bento Grande" and "My Beat," rattle on "Batida Nova Rapida," and flute on "Juna Ocarina"), and full-out songs.
Capoeira Arts Cafe - Music (160 words)
In capoeira, the students (capoeiristas) are responsible for playing the musical instruments and to singing.
The typical capoeira songs are LADAINHAS (Litany), CANTO DE ENTRADA (Beginning song) and call and answer songs in different literary forms: QUADRAS (quatrain), CORRIDOS (running metrics) and CHULAS (genre of music of Portuguese origen, some people call the "Canto de entrada" or "Lovação".
It always begins with the expression: "Ie Viva..." which means "long live." Then, the soloist say a name and when the chorus answer, the chorus repeat the name, adding the word "CAMARÁ", a corruption of the word "camarada" which means comrade.
