When NASA realizes that the manned space ship intended for Mars is a deathtrap due to faulty life support, they decide to fake the landing.
Just as the space ship is about to leave Earth, the crew are removed and flown to an old U.S. Army base somewhere in the United States. As the ship continues with no one aboard, they are forced to fake the trip and landing on Mars over a period of several months. At the same time a journalist becomes suspicious, and every clue he uncovers seems to result in an attempt on his life. When the astronauts are just about to splash down on Earth everything goes wrong.
Released in 1978, Capricorn One is the fictional story of a failed NASA mission to Mars and the subsequent cover-up.
Capricorn One obviously follows on the heels of the urban legend that the original moon landing was a hoax.
The methods of faking the landing are similar to those said to exist in the moon landing "hoax": a sound stage in the middle of a desert with a realistic dust-and-rock landscape, a mock landing module, and astronauts bouncing around in slow motion to simulate lesser gravity.
