Console versions

The Sega Game Gear, Mega Drive/Genesis, Super NES and Game Boy ports of Captain America and the Avengers both follow the arcade game's levels and storyline closely, but are limited to only one and two players, respectively. Most critics felt that the Sega Genesis version was the best of the 16-bit versions, which was unusual, as when a game was made for both the Super Nintendo (ported by Mindscape) and Sega Genesis (ported by Data East themselves), the Super Nintendo version of the game would be technically superior. However, the SNES version's technical superiority was hampered by its sluggish controls and slow gameplay, while the Genesis was much closer to the arcade's gameplay even though the graphics and sounds weren't as good the SNES/arcade game. Captain America spiced things up by making you also take on a sub-boss, and throwing in shoot 'em up levels where your chosen avenger has to fly/swim to a location, blasting down all the enemy robots that come at you.
The Avengers must battle through all of these and more, as well as their robot armies, before heading to the moon for a showdown with the skull.

Captain America was one of the most popular characters that Marvel Comics (then known as Timely) had during the Golden Age of Comic Books.
Captain America has also appeared in several prose novels, notably 1998's Captain America: Liberty's Torch by Tony Isabella and Bob Ingersoll, in which the hero is put on trial for the imagined crimes of America by a hostile militia group.
