Barbossa used to work as a first mate on the Black Pearl, under Captain Jack Sparrow. Barbossa was the leader of a mutiny which left Jack marooned on an island. The remaining crew found the Aztec treasure Jack had been leading them to, and shared it among them. Barbossa spends the course of the film searching for the last coin, in the possession of Elizabeth Swann and then Will Turner.
Once the coins are finally returned to the chest and the necessary blood repaid, Barbossa loses his immortality and is shot dead by Jack Sparrow. However, when Jack the monkey was left alone in the treasure cave with Barbossa's body, he took a coin from the chest.
It is rumoured that Geoffrey Rush has been signed up for Pirates of the Caribbean 2, which suggests that Barbossa may return in the future.
The other-dimensional evil Tony Stark is on the verge of completing his plans to return to his home dimension, and it's up to Captain America and the other heroes to stop his plans.
