Samuel Holland was a Royal Engineer and first surveyor of St. John's Island, later to be known as Prince Edward Island.


Holland College, the community college system for Prince Edward Island, is named for him.

Holland was born in 1728 in Nijmegen, Netherlands.
Holland arrived in October of 1764 on St. John's Island, later known as Prince Edward Island, after the territory was ceded to Britain by France under the Treaty of Paris in 1763.
Samuel Johannes Holland was baptized on 22 September 1729 in the small Lutheran Church in the Dutch town of Deventer in the Province of Overijssel.

Captain Holland, a Dutchman, who leaving his military career in Holland (and, incidentally, a wife and a child) made his way to England, in 1749, there he joined the British army and within a few years was sent to America where he spend the balance of his career.
Captain Holland was among the leading lights in the post war reconstruction of Nova Scotia (DeBarres was another who had a career very much like that of Holland's).
After the capitulation of Louisbourg he made a plan of the town and its environs, met Captain Cook at Kennington Cove, instructed him in the use of the plane table, and later went to the mouth of the St. John River to supervise the erection of Fort Frederick.
