Cara Island is a small island which is located off the west coast of Kintyre in Scotland, one kilometre south of Gigha. The island has not been permanently inhabited since the 1940s although one house which is used as a holiday home by the owner, a lawyer from Glasgow. Cara means corpse, which the island certainly looks like when viewed from Kintyre. Cara has a quite different translation in Gaelic as "dearest" or "dear one". The island of Cara which lies 3 miles off the west coast of Kintyre is owned by the MacDonalds of Largie, and is now the only island in possession of direct descendants of the Lords of the Isles.
The only buildings remaining on the island are the old farm house with the ruins of an older house nearby and the chapel at the north end where there is a safe landing place.
A notable farmer on Cara was Dugald Bell, a staunch Jacobite, he fled from Lochaber and walked with his family and stock to Kintyre where he was given sanctuary by the Laird of Largie and later given the tenancy of Cara.
