The answer to this and other matters of interest to the inhabitants of a tiny Welsh village some 80 years ago can be found in ''One Moonlit Night,'' a lyrical novel by Caradog Prichard (1904-80), a writer celebrated on his native turf but virtually unknown on this side of the ocean.
Prichard's dramatis personae include, among others, a schoolmaster with a terrible temper, a choir of visiting miners from South Wales, a child-abusing transvestite, the village exhibitionist and assorted merchants and schoolchildren.
