Carcavelos is a civil parish (Freguesia) in the Portuguesemunicipality of Cascais, about 12 km west of Lisbon. It has one of the best beaches in the Estoril coast. The village used to be known for the Carcavelos wine, but since the wine production is nowadays reduced, Carcavelos is better known among surfers because of the good surfing condition of the Carcavelos beach. Carcavelos also marks the mouth of the Tagus River. To the east side of the Carcavelos beach there is a huge fortification named Forte de São Julião da Barra. The seafront is dominated by the huge Fort of São Julião da Barra, which served as a political prison in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Carcavelos was once well-known for its strong, sweet white wine, made famous in 1782 when the King of Portugal sent a case as a gift to the Emperor of China.
With small to medium-size waves guaranteed, Carcavelos is a young surfer’s paradise, particularly during the summer.
From Lisbon you just take the "Marginal" to cascais, this is a freeway along the coast, you keep to this road for 15-20 minutes and after passing the NATO base and the fort you should see Carcavelos beach comming up on your left.
Carcavelos is a pretty popular beach, it is the first main beach out of Lisbon(the capital) so if the sun is shinning than you better bet your ass this beach will be so packed you don't even have room on the sand to put out a an A4 sheet of paper never mind a towel.
Some good surf but it's too crowded, carcavelos can also be a very dangerous place to surf.
