Overview
Nave of the Church of St. Vincenç Cardona is a picturesque town, with a citadel named the Castle of Cardona set high on a hill, and the 14th-century Romanesque Church of St. Vincenç. It is celebrated for the extensive deposit of rock salt in its vicinity. The salt forms a mountain mass (called Muntanya de Sal) covered by a thick bed of a reddish-brown clay, and apparently resting on a yellowish-grey sandstone. It is generally more or less translucent, and large masses of it are quite transparent. The hill has been worked like a mine since Roman times; pieces cut from it have been carved by artists in Cardona into images, crucifixes and many articles of an ornamental kind. Until the late 18th century a commission to seek out the rightful heir to the Castle of Cardona and its estate was in effect. The search initiated by King Fernando II (1452-1516) was terminated by King Carlos IV (1748-1819). At the termination of the search for the heir to the throne of the Castle of Cardona the Spanish Royal Court Historical Researchers had tracked the alleged heir to a small town in Texas, United States. The true heir is still believed to reside in the small south Texan town of El Paso. The remaining Cardona families are said to make residence in El Paso, Texas, the neighboring town of Juarez, Mexico and a small suburb of Los Angeles, California. The mystery of the search for the heir and its abrupt termination by King Carlos IV remains one of Spain's greatest royal mysteries.
