Website www.carinaround.co.uk

Carina Round is a British singer/songwriter who hails from Wolverhampton. She was born in 1979 in the Low Hill area of the city and grew up listening to her turntable given to her for her fifth birthday. Coming from Italian stock, at 21 she put out The First Blood Mystery and three years later, she released The Disconnection to a fair amount of critical acclaim. Comparisons are frequently drawn to PJ Harvey, though Round would contend that she is more directly influenced by Patti Smith. Carina also worked with the industrial rock band Black Light Burns, providing some backing vocals to the song Cruel Melody. In June 2007 she released her third album Slow Motion Addict. slant // magazine.com: Music Review - The Disconnection (338 words)
But Round never directly references her predecessors; she's like a living musical gene pool, her voice summoning the complete history of rock but never to the point of distraction (she provides her own dreamy disturbances, in fact), and The Disconnection is like the musical map that ensures she (and we) never get off track.
It's a blues album to be sure: "[I] smoked his cigarette 'cos his lips had touched it," she sings glumly on "Motel 74." But Round doesn't commit herself to one genre, nor does she spread herself too thin across the album's near-perfect nine tracks.
Round's unique but remotely familiar voice (she's capable of Fiona-style huskiness and Tori-esque wailing, all wrapped in a soft, lovely tremor reminiscent of the late Buckley) float high in the mix, above the delicate piano and horn arrangements, right where it should be.
