sport.iafrica.com | today's news Hoeft injury blow for All Blacks (408 words)
Hoeft's place at loosehead prop in the starting lineup will be taken by Dave Hewett, with Hewett's Crusaders and Canterbury team-mate Greg Somerville coming on to the bench.
Hoeft was also ruled out on the eve of the All Blacks' previous encounter with the Springboks — a record 52-16 win in Pretoria three weeks ago — with a groin injury doing the damage.
Hoeft is desperate for some game time, with his only action at international level this year having been against Wales in June.
Sport: Other Sports: Revived Hoeft Aiming For The Top (772 words)
Rejuvenated Highlanders prop Carl Hoeft has not given up hope of regaining his All Black jersey this year, but is enjoying his rugby so much in the resurgent Super 12 side he's happy to go with the flow as regards his future.
Hoeft, who has played 30 tests for the All Blacks but none since the 2003 World Cup, has been in outstanding form in a dominant Highlanders front row this season and is now being mentioned as a strong contender for the loosehead prop position against the Lions later this year.
Hoeft, who is in the final year of his contract with the NZRU, is contending with incumbent Tony Woodcock and possibly Greg Somerville for the No 1 jersey against the Lions.
