Encyclopedia > Carl Walther

Carl Walther GmbH Sportwaffen is a German arms manufacturer. For more than 100 years, Walther has created major breakthroughs in the development of pistols. Many have become legendary, like the PPK and the P99 — both weapons of choice for the fictional character James Bond — and the P38, often used by Nazi movie villains.

The Walther PP is a pistol made in Germany, France and the United States (PPK and PPK/S [1]) at various times.
The Walther PPK (German: Polizei Pistole Kriminal, 'Police Pistol Detective' [Detective Pistol], or Polizei Pistole Kurz - 'Police Pistol Short') is a shortened version of the PP (Polizei Pistole) and differs from it in size (shorter barrel and grip) and magazine size.
The Walther PPK was license manufactured in the United States from 1978 by Ranger Manufacturing in Gadsen, Alabama and sold by Interarms in Alexandria, Virginia.
Walther recollections (1789 words)
Carl Walther Company, of Germany came in to existence in circa 1886 and in 1903 began the production of fire arms for hunting and target practice.
Little is reported about Walther during the years that Europe was ravaged by war and one assumes, in the light of how Governments work, that Walther, as a machine tool company, would be forced to join the war effort in manufacturing weapons.
Walther adopted a walking poodle in many adverts and as time has marched on those of us who remember a lifetime of association wonder how such a giant could simply walk out of the picture.
