Maderno began his career in the marble industry before assisting his uncle Domenico Fontana in Rome frome 1588. His first piece, in 1596, was the façade of the Santa Susanna church, often considered to be the first piece in the Baroque movement. This façade won the attention of Pope Paul V, allowing him to take part in the construction of the St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, modifying Michelangelo's initial plans. The formulation is as massive as the church, and constructed to allow for Papal blessings from above.
