Count (Conte) Carlo Sforza was born in Montignoso di Lunigiana, Italy in 1873. Sforza entered the diplomatic service in 1896 and served in Cairo, Paris, Constantinople, Beijing, Bucharest, Madrid, London, and Belgrade and after the First World War became foreign minister under Giovanni Giolitti. Sforza finally waited to see Italy surrender in September 1943. He returned to his country and in June 1944 he accepted the offer of Ivanoe Bonomi to join his provisional antifascist government.
