Professional career

Known as "El Indio", Quintana turned pro in 1997 and won his first 23 professional fights, including 18 by way of KO. Although he remained undefeted, bouts of inactivity throughout his career resulted in a slow progression to the top of his division.


vs. Joel Julio

In June of 2006, he notched by far the biggest win of his career, against highly regarded Colombian prospect Joel Julio, by unanimous decision. The win set up a shot at the vacant WBA Welterweight Title against Miguel Angel Cotto. On December 2, 2006, Quintana fought fellow undefeated Puerto Rican Cotto, who moved up in weight from Jr. Welterweight. The fight was dead even until the fifth round, where Quintana went down twice: Once by a bodyshot and then again by a flurry that ended with a right hook to the head. Cotto won by TKO after Quintana quit on his stool prior to the 6th round.
