Carnival Records was a record company started in 1961 by Jerry Moss and Herb Alpert.
They released one record, which was distributed via Dot Records. However, problems occurred because there already existed another "Carnival Records", and they changed the name in 1962 to A&M Records.
The group's first single was For The First Time, released in August of 1964 by CarnivalRecords.
Many consider August 15, 1964, the date of recording, to be the official start of the group.
It included the Bivins/George Smith-wrote tune We Were Made As One, originally recorded in 1966, but covered in a capella, doo wop style, to emphasize the group's doo wop roots.
