Caroga is a town located in Fulton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,407.

History

The town was created in 1842.


Geography

The north town line is the border of Hamilton County, New York. The town is inside the Adirondack State Park.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 140.5 km˛ (54.2 mi˛). 131.7 km˛ (50.8 mi˛) of it is land and 8.8 km˛ (3.4 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 6.25% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,407 people, 588 households, and 392 families residing in the town. The population density is 10.7/km˛ (27.7/mi˛). There are 1,794 housing units at an average density of 13.6/km˛ (35.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 98.86% White, 0.00% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. 0.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 588 households out of which 27.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.7% are married couples living together, 7.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% are non-families. 26.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.87.


In the town the population is spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 28.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 105.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.9 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $34,911, and the median income for a family is $36,852. Males have a median income of $26,452 versus $22,067 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,048. 9.0% of the population and 6.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.1% of those under the age of 18 and 9.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
