The Carrizo Gorge Railway (AAR reporting mark CZRY) was created in 2001 to provide passenger and freight service along the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway line between Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, and Plaster City, California, United States. The other freight operator on the SD&AE, the SD&IV, did not want to invest the $5.5 million dollars necessary to repair the collapsed tunnels and bridges in the Carrizo Gorge. The section of rail that goes through the Carrizo Gorge is one of the main reasons the San Diego and Arizona Railway was called the "Impossible Railroad".

Carrizo Gorge is a spectacular canyon in the Jacumba Mountains of Southern California, traversed by a spectacular railroad, the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway.
From the very beginning, the rail line through the Carrizo Gorge was a maintenance nightmare extreme heat and cold, of flash floods from late summer monsoonal thunderstorms, and of tunnels bored through ancient landslides.
Below Carrizo Gorge itself, the line was buried under sand or washed away for many miles, as at the mouth of Meyer Canyon.
