Carroll is a village located in Wayne County, Nebraska. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 238.


Geography

Carroll is located at 42°16'31" North, 97°11'29" West (42.275344, -97.191370)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.4 km˛ (0.2 mi˛). None of the area is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 238 people, 104 households, and 68 families residing in the village. The population density is 612.6/km˛ (1,592.5/mi˛). There are 116 housing units at an average density of 298.6/km˛ (776.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 96.22% White, 0.00% African American, 1.68% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 2.10% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 104 households out of which 26.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.8% are married couples living together, 5.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% are non-families. 32.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.85.


In the village the population is spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 21.4% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 23.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 101.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.4 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $31,875, and the median income for a family is $39,375. Males have a median income of $27,500 versus $16,250 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,115. 11.9% of the population and 8.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.5% of those under the age of 18 and 21.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The location of Carroll was determined by E. Winter, general manager of the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railroad, who named the town for Charles Carroll, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Carroll started with a small schoolhouse, that was replaced in 1900 by a two-story frame building for grades 1-10.
Carroll celebrated its centennial in July of 1986 with a high school alumni banquet, and "the largest parade ever seen in Carroll." Many former residents and children of former residents returned to Carroll to make the celebration a big success.

According to legend, Carroll men owe their Vermin nickname to rodents having taken possession of the dorm between the departure of the brothers in 1966 and the arrival of Notre Dame undergrads the following year.
Carroll was home to graduate students from 1970 until 1977, after which it returned to being an undergraduate dorm.
Carroll residents used to take advantage of their hall's remote locale and gothic architecture at Halloween by turning it into a haunted house.
